On November 22nd, we marked a milestone that still feels surreal: the one-year anniversary of purchasing the Portland Gear Hub building, our forever home. More than 50 people gathered with us to celebrate, filling the space with the same energy, generosity, and community spirit that made this moment possible in the first place. It was a reminder that nothing we’ve built, and nothing we dream of building next, happens without the people who believe in our mission.
This celebration also marked the debut of something new for us, a yearly award meant to honor the individuals who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to Ketcha Outdoors and Portland Gear Hub. Naming the award was the easy part. The Brown Family has been a steady source of love, leadership, and commitment to our organization for years. Their influence is woven into who we are and how we show up for our community. When we think of this award, certain words rise to the surface: commitment, passion, accountability, authenticity, and a genuine love for the mission. Those qualities define the Brown Family, and they set the tone for what this recognition should stand for.
Then came the question: who should be the very first recipient?
The answer felt obvious.
Bob Brown has been involved with Ketcha Outdoors for over a decade and has served as a dedicated board member for the last eight years. His authenticity is unmatched. He embodies every value this award represents. Bob doesn’t just support our mission; he lives it. He was a driving force behind our building purchase campaign, pushing us forward with a belief and clarity that helped turn a dream into a reality.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that without his leadership, we’d be in a very different place today.
So it was an honor, and honestly, a joy, to present the inaugural Brown Family Community Award to Bob Brown. A fitting first chapter for an award rooted in service, heart, and the power of showing up for your community.
