In this week’s Deep Dive video, Farm & Forest School Director Kailina Mills, EdD, takes us inside the classroom as students play a lively game of Charades—part of their preparation for an upcoming class play performance at the end of the month. What looks like simple fun is actually rich, intentional learning in action.
As Kailina shares, this playful activity helps students build a wide range of skills all at once: expressive language, creativity, collaboration, confidence, and emotional awareness. Students practice using their bodies to communicate ideas, reading social cues, taking turns, and supporting one another—all while strengthening focus and self-regulation. Charades also encourages risk-taking in a safe, supportive environment, helping children feel more comfortable performing in front of others as they prepare for their big moment on stage.
This is a beautiful example of how play-based learning at Farm & Forest School nurtures the whole child—mind, body, and heart—every single day.
