This summer has been one for the books at the Portland Gear Hub! Our shop has been buzzing with bike repairs, new riders finding their perfect fit, and community members coming together to share the joy of being on two wheels.
From June through August, our Bikes for All Mainers program welcomed dozens of participants eager to learn bike safety, maintenance skills, and the rules of the road. Each graduate rolled away on a refurbished bike — ready for daily commutes, weekend adventures, and the simple joy of cycling.
Summer also meant another successful season for Oxbow, our youth bike program that blends hands-on mechanic skills with outdoor exploration. Young riders learned how to keep their bikes in top shape, then put that knowledge to the test on group rides through Greater Portland’s trails and neighborhoods.
In the shop, our team of staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to refurbish hundreds of donated bikes. Every sale supports our mission, and we’ve been thrilled to see so many new and returning customers find affordable, high-quality gear for their adventures.
We also had the chance to connect with the community beyond our walls, from bike safety checks at local events to group rides that brought neighbors together for a spin along the waterfront.
As summer winds down, we’re already gearing up for fall with repair workshops, volunteer nights, and more ways to get involved. Whether you’re brand-new to biking or a lifelong rider, there’s always a place for you at the Portland Gear Hub. We’re getting ready for our Annual Freeport Ride on August 26th. Come on out and ride with us!
Thank you to everyone who donated bikes, volunteered time, joined a program, or stopped by the shop this summer. You keep our wheels — and our mission — moving forward.
